Did you know that coral reefs are disappearing at an alarming rate?

Scientists estimate that we’ve already lost around 50% of the world’s coral reefs over the past few decades — and without urgent action, up to 90% could vanish by 2050. In Alor, we’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of destructive fishing practices like dynamite fishing, which have shattered coral structures and destroyed critical marine habitats. At the same time, rising sea temperatures continue to bleach and kill large sections of reef, disturbing the delicate balance of life that depends on these ecosystems.

At Nautika Foundation, we’re responding with action. One of our core initiatives is coral transplantation using the Reef Star method — a proven approach developed by MARS Sustainable Solutions. By attaching coral fragments to these star-shaped artificial reef structures, we’re helping to restore damaged habitats, speed up coral growth, and bring vibrant marine life back to the reef.

But there is hope. In our first restoration effort at the end of 2024, 94% of coral fragments successfully survived and grew an average of 4 cm in just 5 months. This promising result gives us the confidence to scale up and make a bigger impact.
